Residents gathered for an anti-violence rally Wednesday after a 17-year-old Newburgh boy was shot earlier in the week.
They say the victim, Ra'quan Bryant, is the grandson of prominent Newburgh activist and former mayoral candidate Omari Shakur.
The Newburgh Free Academy basketball player remains hospitalized in intensive care after Tuesday's shooting, although he is expected to recover.
Police are searching for multiple suspects who they say jumped out of a black SUV and opened fire as Bryant walked on Lake Street. They say the suspects hit him in the back twice.
A police source tells News 12 it appears that Bryant was targeted following a weekend fight in Beacon.
Police have stepped up efforts to combat illegal handguns in the city. Officials say they've seized 30 this year.
The latest shooting comes a month after Glen Wright, a Newburgh father, was shot and killed in the city.
Shakur, Bryant's grandfather, says his son was also shot in 2006 during an incident with police.
"You can't walk down the streets now," Shakur says.
