A man was hospitalized after a shooting in Mount Vernon Wednesday afternoon, police say.
According to Mount Vernon police, officers descended on the intersection of South Ninth Avenue and Sanford Boulevard around 2 p.m.
Police discovered a man with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Police say the victim was aware and alert as he was sent to a hospital for treatment.
People living and working in the area tell News 12 this is typically a quiet area and they were shocked to hear about the shooting.
"We have no incidents around here like that. This is the first time I've heard of a shooting right there," says Leon, who lives down the street from where the shooting happened.
But looking at the city as a whole, there have been nine shootings that resulted in injuries so far this year.
As for this most recent shooting, police say no suspects are in custody at this time.
