A man was hospitalized after a shooting in Mount Vernon Wednesday afternoon, police say.

According to Mount Vernon police, officers descended on the intersection of South Ninth Avenue and Sanford Boulevard around 2 p.m.

Police discovered a man with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Police say the victim was aware and alert as he was sent to a hospital for treatment.

People living and working in the area tell News 12 this is typically a quiet area and they were shocked to hear about the shooting.

"We have no incidents around here like that. This is the first time I've heard of a shooting right there," says Leon, who lives down the street from where the shooting happened.

But looking at the city as a whole, there have been nine shootings that resulted in injuries so far this year.

As for this most recent shooting, police say no suspects are in custody at this time.

Mount Vernon officials asked anyone with information to contact detectives at 914-665-2510 or to anonymously text tips by sending MVPD and the tip to 847411.
