Police: 1 dead in multivehicle crash involving 3 Clarkstown North High School students

An 18-year-old driver is facing charges following a crash that killed his friend and injured his girlfriend on Thursday.
The driver was allegedly driving drunk at the time of the crash on Congers Road in New City around 11 p.m.
Caution tape was still outside of Clarkstown North High School Friday as the community remembers the student who died in thecrash. 


The 16-year-old victim has been identified as Clarkstown North High School junior Vladyslav Hvalyk.
News 12 was told he was also a criminal justice student at Rockland BOCES. 
On Friday afternoon, the alleged drunk driver, 18-year-old Alan Mendoza, who is a senior at Clarkstown North, was in court. 
He is facing a handful of felonies, including aggravated vehicular homicide and second-degree manslaughter.


Investigators say the crash also seriously injured a 17-year-old girl. She is Mendoza's girlfriend, according to his attorney.
While police continue their investigation and wait for the toxicology report to come back, they are imploring parents and guardians to continue speaking to their children on the responsibility that they have for not only themselves and their passengers, but everyone on the roads.
Two weeks ago, a crash in Montebello killed 16-year-old Jacqueline Zangrilli.. The 17-year-old boy who was driving is also facing charges for allegedly being behind the wheel intoxicated.
Crisis counselors will be at Clarkstown North High School Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
