Thousands of people signed a petition to keep Ralph's Italian Ices open in Mamaroneck, and dozens of people dropped in on a village board meeting to show their support, but the owner is still left trying to pursue other options in a bid to keep his shop in business.
Many parents say they like the shop because it gives kids a safe place to go.
But the village Zoning Board of Appeals ordered it to close by last Thursday after a dispute about permits. The owner continued to open his doors until authorities forced him to close them Saturday.
"We are trying to work with the village and get along and come to some peaceful remedy to the situation and open up the store," says Scott Rosenberg, the store owner. If the petition fails, he says his last resort may be suing the village.
The closure also put about a dozen employees out of work.
"I know it's only been a couple of days, but I was supposed to work one of those days" says Madison Crane, a former worker. "So that means one less day of work for me."
