Pelham firefighters step up to help ‘brother’ who lost everything in fire
Pelham firefighters are stepping up to help one of their own "brothers" who lost everything.
Firefighter Michael Senerchia was at home on Fletcher Avenue in Mount Vernon Monday, when a fast-moving fire ripped through the multistory house where he rents an apartment.
Senerchia and his family escaped with their lives, but lost everything in the blaze, including Christmas presents, for his kids.
A crib stuffed with toys now sits right next to Senerchia's locker at his firehouse in Pelham. The gifts are just some of the outpouring of support he and his family - including a newborn baby - have received from the community.
"I can't say enough about all the support we're getting. It's making it a lot easier than it would be, if we didn't have so much love and people reaching out to us," said Senerchia.
The Pelham Fire Department has set up a GoFundMe page to help Senerchia and his family.
“The initial goal I set it at $5,000.  I had no idea how successful it would be, it raised over $20,000," says Lt. Vincent D'Onofrio, of the Pelham Fire Department.
