Police in Peekskill are looking for a gunman who shot two women Friday night on Main Street.
Officers were called to the area near Main Street and Nelson Avenue at 9:15 p.m. Two women – a driver and a passenger – were traveling east on Main when they stopped at a red light. Investigators say a man walked up to their car and started shooting. He then fled the scene.
One woman suffered gunshot wounds to her abdomen area. The other was hit in the leg. The victims, who have not yet been named, were rushed to the hospital and have since been released.
Investigators are still searching for the gunman and have not yet said if this was a targeted hit or a random shooting.
People on Main Street say they are shaken up by the incident.
"It's scary because it's at the corner,” says Consuela Martinez, a worker at the Peekskill Gourmet Deli on Main Street for eight years. “For my customers, it is very important to stay safe."
Martinez says she and her customers are concerned about the recent violence in their neighborhood.
Police are asking for the public's help in the investigation.
Officials say multiple shots were also fired Monday morning in the city. They say the shots were fired at a residence near the 600 Block of John Street around 1:30 a.m. No one was hurt, and no arrests were made.
Anyone with information about the incidents is urged to call Peekskill police at 914-737-8000.
