For the first time in New York state public high school sports, cheerleading squads are heading to the state championships.
The only team from Rockland County competing at the state championships this weekend in Syracuse is from Pearl River High School.
Captain Kristen Flaherty says the team practices 10-16 hours a week to perfect their skills.
Prior to 2016, cheerleading was not considered a sport in New York, but the rules have since changed.
