Jewish synagogues on Long Island are on high alert after hostages were held at the Congregation Beth Israel in Texas.

Nassau Police say they've stepped up patrols at synagogues across the county, including Midway Jewish Center in Syosset, following the hostage situation in Texas. 

The situation unfolded during a Saturday morning Shabbat service when a group of four people, including the rabbi, were taken hostage at Congregation Beth Israel in the city of Colleyville, about 30 miles northwest of Dallas.

Officials say the group of hostages were being held by a man demanding the release of a federal prisoner being held in north Texas who was serving time for attempted murder in a terrorism-related case.

One of the hostages was released shortly after 5 p.m. After a more than 10 hour standoff, the FBI's rescue team stormed the synagogue and rescued the hostages.

Officials did not release how the suspect died or his identity.

On Long Island, Nassau Executive Bruce Blakeman and Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder issued a statement in response to the situation that says, “The Nassau County Police reports no credible threats against any house of worship or large gatherings. Due to an ongoing incident in Colleyville, Texas – and out of an abundance of caution – the NCPD continues their intensified patrols around all Jewish congregations.”

Suffolk police is issued a similar statement Sunday morning about no credible threats in the area.

The Islamic Center of Long Island says they strongly condemn the hostage situation.
