It’s been a soggy summer for New Jersey residents, and Friday evening was no exception. Severe thunderstorms crossed the state following dangerous heat.
As the storm passed through Roselle Park, the top half of a tree broke off and landed on two vehicles and some wires at the corner of Chestnut Street and East Webster Avenue.
The involved van appears to have been parked against the curb. The other vehicle was in the middle of the road. The Roselle Park Fire Department confirmed no injuries from the incident. The department said one person was trapped but was safely removed.
Third Ward Councilwoman Rosanna Lyons lives nearby and said more needs to be done to prevent this type of incident. She said a meeting was held on Friday morning with various area workers and leaders to talk about preventative measures.
“I’m just looking at the car behind us. That’s something that’s so scary, and I know that they’re OK, but just even going through that is traumatic," said Lyons.
Crews were on the scene making repairs and clearing the street.
Fast-moving storms leave damage across New Jersey
In Union Township, a tree came down feet away from a house on Chestnut Street. The storm hit all over New Jersey. Several trees and power lines fell down in Paramus in Bergen County that knocked out power to locals for hours.
News 12 also saw minor tree damage in Parsippany in Morris County on and near homes. A neighbor said that in a summer of storms, what stood out about this one was how fast it moved.
“Thank God there was no cars right here, it didn't fall that way, it was away from the house so not too much damage on the house," said Herby Dieujuste, of Union Township. "It’s a good thing they already got it cleared up, but it was pretty fast, it just happened and before the rain, then the rain came and it just dropped, but it's been a pretty wild summer so far.”
