A cash-strapped private school in Rockland is shutting its doors days before the start of the school year.

Parents say their tuition money to the Rockland Country Day School isn't being returned.

"Sixty-three hundred in full. It was $6,000 tuition and a $300 enrollment fee,” says parent Tracy Anser.

Anser is one of dozens of parents who prepaid thousands in tuition for Rockland Country Day School in September.

"I paid them July 19 and their check was cashed July 20," says Anser.

The Congers private school, which has a history of financial problems, decided last week to shut its doors after 60 years, leaving parents scrambling to make other arrangements.

Head of School Jocelyn Feuerstein says administrators hoped to be able to balance the budget by now but ultimately fell short, leading them to make the tough decision before the start of the school year.

She wouldn't say whether or not parents will be refunded, but said staff are doing their best to help find alternative schools for all 73 kids who were supposed to start in a few days.
