Although the current school year isn't even halfway over, administrators and parents in districts like Yonkers are preparing for next September.
A districtwide fair will be held Saturday at Saunders High School for families and children who are heading to school for the first time, as well as for students entering middle and high schools.
"Individual schools will be represented by teachers, administrators, support staff, and families can get an idea of how they are greeted and how the schools are spoken about," said Yonkers School Superintendent Michael Yazurlo.
Families new to Yonkers or the school district need to make an appointment and go to the Board of Education to register their child. Other families received cards in the mail outlining open houses and the school fair.
The amount of new students is putting a stress on school buildings where classes are getting crowded.
"It's not in the too distant future when space is just going to be maximized," said Yazurlo. "We're going to have to seriously consider and begin the process of building new schools."
Sites are already being studied for two new school buildings on the city's west side.
