Hundreds of parents, students and activists took to the streets of Spring Valley Monday night to demand that state leaders appoint a special state monitor to oversee the Orthodox-run East Ramapo school board.

Parents say they want the state monitor to oversee the board so that all students get a fair shake. One parent said the kids need a fair education and they're not getting it now. 

The state Assembly has already passed a bill on the matter, but it has stalled in the Senate. The Senate offered a compromise bill, but local leaders said it has no teeth. Assembly members say it's meaningless if the monitor only has oversight of violations of state and federal law.

Spring Valley High School junior Alyiah Green said she attended Monday's rally to represent her fellow students because they all are entitled to the same education that everyone else in the state gets.

The hope is that a vote on the East Ramapo Oversight Bill will happen in Albany Tuesday.
