Parents are calling for Blind Brook School District officials to resign after they say they were not notified ahead of time about a school shutting down.
The Bruno Ponterio Ridge Street School in Rye Brook was shut down by the state due to construction, but parents say their district leaders have no contingency plan in place.
School officials tell News 12 that the State Education Department notified the district of a number of fire safety concerns earlier this week at Ridge Street Elementary, including the fact that it has a new fire system that isn't fully online yet because it hasn't been inspected.
However, children were inside the building Monday through Wednesday without proper clearance.
On top of that, parents tell News 12 it wasn't until Thursday morning that the district formally announced school was canceled Friday.
Some families say they only found out about it themselves when they read an online news article about it Wednesday night.
Parents are very frustrated that Superintendent Dr. Patrick Brimstein spoke to the press before conveying this very important update to them.
Brimstein told News 12 that the plans were not finalized until late Wednesday and that his team notified families as soon as possible.
“Typically that particular publication is released in the late afternoon on Thursday, and this particular one was released first thing in the morning,” he says.
Brimstein says the school is getting inspected on Friday and that he will update parents over the weekend if doors will reopen Monday.
News 12 was told the project at Ridge Street Elementary has been a disaster from the very beginning with allegedly poor oversight and work chronically behind schedule.
Parents are hosting a rally Friday morning about this incident. Many of them insist there needs to be a change in leadership at the top of the district.
