Drivers who use the Harlem River Drive near West 179th Street in Washington Heights should prepare for upcoming overnight ramp closures.
The New York state Department of Transportation has announced that both the entrance ramp to the southbound Harlem River Drive and the Exit 24 ramp to Amsterdam Avenue at West 179th Street will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting Aug. 26 and continuing through Sept. 9. These closures will not be in effect during Labor Day weekend.
During these closures, drivers needing to access the southbound Harlem River Drive will have to take a detour via Amsterdam Avenue. Those trying to reach Amsterdam Avenue or West 179th Street from the northbound Harlem River Drive will need to go through the George Washington Bridge area and follow the posted signs to get back on course.
These closures are part of an $18 million project aimed at repairing bridges across New York City. The state DOT has warned that bad weather could cause changes to the closure schedule, so drivers are encouraged to stay updated.
Motorists are also reminded to slow down and exercise caution in work zones. Speeding fines are doubled in these areas, and receiving two or more speeding tickets in a work zone could lead to a suspended driver’s license.
