New York will ultimately make the decision about whether schools should require students to get the COVID-19 vaccine, and Ossining School District superintendent Ray Sanchez says he believes the state should strongly consider that mandate when they have more information.

Pfizer announced Wednesday that its vaccine is safe and 100% effective in kids aged 12 to 15.

Sanchez's district, which includes six schools with a total of about 5,100 students, has not yet solidified a plan for the next school year since so much changes each day.

"Guidelines and the rights from the state will provide me some direction as to what I can require families to do. What I would say now is that I would very strongly encourage if the opportunity is there, as I do with staff, to get vaccinated," says Sanchez.

The Ossining School District doesn't currently mandate teachers and staff to get vaccinated.
