The Ossining Police Department is the first in Westchester to equip officers with body cameras.
Ossining started testing the body cameras in April. In August, officials say they became the first police department in Westchester to employ them full-time.
Lt. Kevin Sylvester says officers are required to turn the cameras on any time they are headed to a serious call. The video is then recorded on a device that is uploaded to a cloud, so it cannot be edited or tampered with.
Sylvester says the cameras will be primarily used for evidence collection. He says the ultimate goal of the cameras is to make police work more transparent.
The department currently has 10 cameras. It is hoping every single officer on the force has one in the future.
Westchester County police will also be starting a pilot program using body cameras next year.
