A facility in Highland Mills is helping people with traumatic brain injuries overcome disability through art.

Steven D'Ariano, 26, has a genetic brain disorder that's left him in a wheelchair, unable to move the left side of his body, for the last four years.

"I went to sleep one night and I woke up and I couldn't walk," he says.

Despite the severity of his disability, the staff at Beacon Place, a facility for people with traumatic brain injury, uses encouragement through art to help D'Ariano and others push through.

Kaitlyn Nivins, 29, has had more than 80 brain surgeries since she was a child, but you'd never know it based off her delicately made crafts.

"With help...even people with only part of a brain can actually learn to function again," says Beacon Place's Daniel Schiavo.
