Rep. Nita Lowey is fighting to restore about $4 million in federal funds that would help an estimated 200,000 hungry families in the Hudson Valley.

Officials say that the summertime is even more intense for hungry children.

For example, a food shelter on Don Bosco Plane in Port Chester helped feed 11 hungry children while school was in session in May. After school was finished for the year, the number skyrocketed to 112 in June.

Guatemalan day laborer Edwin Filippo says his income evaporates every summer, as well as his ability to provide warm meals for his two children. The Food Bank of Westchester can help provide meals to Filippo's family, but budget cuts in Washington are threatening some of its summer funding.
