A preliminary report shows the Silver Stream in Newburgh has been contaminated by toxic firefighting foam.

Newburgh officials say the foam spilled from the Atlantic Aviation hangar at Stewart International Airport earlier this month after an equipment malfunction.

Surface water samples were taken from three locations upstream and downstream. Officials say each sample had high concentrations of PFAS, a potentially cancer-causing pollutant.

As News 12 reported in 2016, Newburgh learned its drinking water was contaminated by the cancer-causing chemicals from firefighting foam at Stewart Air National Guard Base. The city now outsources its water supply.
