The massive Jennings Creek wildfire is now 100% contained after more than a week of fierce firefighting.
The fire started earlier this month in Passaic County, New Jersey before jumping across the border into New York. It forced people to leave their homes voluntarily and burned thousands of acres of land.
Gov. Kathy Hochul praised the efforts of the firefighters who worked tirelessly to protect homes and the environment.
New York State Parks employee Dariel Vasquez, 18, died while fighting the fire. Officials say a tree fell on him.
This was New York’s largest wildfire since 2008.
