The New York State Thruway reopened in Ramapo Friday evening, hours after two people were killed in a multivehicle collision.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 9:45 a.m. at Exit 14B.
Police say a box truck traveling north in the right-hand lane cut across two lanes, striking two other trucks. It then hit the guardrail, sending it to the southbound side where it was struck by a tractor-trailer.
Police are still investigating what caused the box truck driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Authorities have identified the passenger of the box truck as 20-year-old Juan Soto. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, 33-year-old Ramburan Humakaar, was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. Both men were from Queens.
For several hours, traffic was diverted at Exit 15 to Route 17 south, causing backups as far as 10 miles. The road was reopened at around 7 p.m. Friday.
