Dozens of new affordable apartments are scheduled to be built in Yonkers.
The apartments, located at 35 Vineyard Ave. near Ashburton Avenue, are replacing Mulford Gardens, which was once one of the city's oldest and most dangerous public housing complexes.
State and Yonkers officials broke ground Tuesday on the fourth phase of the Ashburton Avenue Revitalization program to create a 56-unit apartment community called Grant Park 2.
The city tore down the dilapidated 500-unit Mulford Gardens housing complex more than four years ago, and replaced part of it two years ago with a new, well-maintained affordable housing community called Grant Park at Croton Heights.
Construction work is already underway on Grant Park 2, thanks to more than $20 million in funding from the state.
Grant Park 2 is expected to be completed in September 2015.
