Three firefighters were injured and about 20 people were left homeless after a fire in Mount Vernon fire on Sunday, according to fire officials.
Fire officials began dousing the fire at 111 North 7th Ave. just after 1 p.m.  There were initial reports of people trapped in the house, but News 12 learned that they were all able to escape safely without injury.
The fire quickly went to two alarms and spread to the house next door. Several other departments from different towns were called in to help.
At least three firefighters were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Camilo Pegana, a next-door neighbor, tells News 12 he was arriving home when he saw the smoke and neighbors frantic.
Pegana says he tried to help by honking his horn to “get the attention of people to get out fast.”
Fire officials say yesterday's strong winds were a problem.
Firefighters were able to quench the flames at 113 North 7th Ave., but were struggling to extinguish the fire at 111.
There is no word yet on exactly what started the fire. The Red Cross is helping the people who have been displaced by the fire.
Some fire victims returned this morning to see if they could salvage any of their belongings. They were too upset to speak on camera but told News 12 it didn't take long for thick smoke to fill the home and that everyone knew they had to get out quickly.
