More than 100 students from Yonkers Middle High School were taken to the hospital after being overcome with fumes.
Police say at least 1,500 students were evacuated after dozens of students and teachers suddenly became sick at at the schools.
Officials say 147 students and three teachers were taken to five hospitals. Hospital officials say there were no students who showed serious illness symptoms.
Teachers say it was around 11 a.m. when staff members began noticing students in the cafeteria were coughing.
Police say investigators are looking into the possibility that the fumes were pepper spray, and part of a student prank.
Police are reviewing video, interviewing individuals and working with the fire department to try to determine what exactly occurred.
School is expected to be open Thursday.
If the incident turns out to be a prank, investigators say whoever is responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
