For the third time since Saturday, law enforcement in Rockland County helped de-escalate an incident involving a person threatened to harm themselves.
News 12 was in the quiet condo community of the Knolls at Ramapough on Tuesday, when law enforcement responded for a 25-year-old man who had made threats and then barricaded himself inside the home's bathroom.
Police issued a shelter in place for residents of the complex.
Suffern Chief of Police Andrew Loughlin tells News 12 what happened.
“He had made several threats yelling out of the window towards officers that he was gonna harm himself. That he was gonna shoot it out with the police, if we tried to go in," he said.
Chief Loughlin says the situation on Kensico Court ended after nearly two and a half hours, when the man surrendered without incident or injury.
Rockland County's REACT team lead the negotiation.
REACT is similar to a SWAT team in which they handle high-risk situations.
The team is made up of various law enforcement officers from departments throughout the county.
“Obviously, don’t want to see an incident like this happen at all, but to reach a resolution to where no one was injured none of the residents of the house. The subject wasn’t injured. no officers were injured," said Chief Loughlin. "It’s really the best outcome we could ask for.”
Suffern police say they were originally called there by the man's mother because he had been breaking things.
Police then arrived there to learned he threatened his mother as well as his own life with a knife.
Ultimately, the family members left the home and the man then barricaded himself in the bathroom.
Rockland’s REACT team was called in to negotiate.
The Suffern police chief thanked all the agencies who made a difference.
The man was arrested and now faces charges, including criminal mischief and for having a weapon.
Suffern Village Mayor Mike Curley told News 12 that the man had recently been arrested and was out on bail.
