Motorists could be paying more money in toll costs at this time next year as the New York State Thruway Authority is proposing toll increases.
The Authority says the money is needed to pay for much needed improvements and to bolster revenue. But as expected, proposed toll hikes are already meeting with opposition – including ride-share service drivers.
The Thruway authorities say the proposed toll increases would be the first in 14 years. The Authority has already authorized the start of the process to increase tolls at the three-mile long Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge to pay for repairs and to offset expected system-wide revenue declines.
Revenue levels are expected to drop by about $240 million by 2025.
If approved, tolls could increase by 5% next year and by another 5% in 2027.
