The New York State Department of Health says the XBB 1.5 subvariant of COVID-19 makes up over 50% of cases in the state.
Experts say early estimates indicate this new strain is able to spread more rapidly than other variants currently circulating.
The state department is urging New Yorkers ages 6 months and older to get the COVID-19 Bivalent booster.
