The NYPD says more than 400 rape cases have been reported in the Bronx so far this year -- that’s up 21% from this time last year.
“It’s very concerning, especially you know, even during the day,” said Karin Tifa, of Parkchester.
“The area seemed nice before, but it’s changing,” said Oneda, of Clason Point.
“This is a wakeup call for me right now,” said Andrea Thomas, of Clason Point.
Among the latest incidents, three reported cases between Nov. 28 and Dec. 12, within two miles of each other in Parkchester and Clason Point.
A 21-year-old man was arrested in connection with one rape in Parkchester, but authorities are still searching for two other men.
“Believe me, I’m shaking right now because I was not expecting to hear this,” said Thomas.
Volunteers with the Parkchester Watch Group want to help by organizing self-defense classes to put residents at ease.
“I think if people know they have some strategies to help keep themselves safe, I think it would be a step in the right direction,” said Peter Hamilton, of the Parkchester Watch Group. “[The classes are] not a cure-all, be-all; but I think it definitely makes people feel safer.”
Tifa said she’s interested in taking the class, as people should stay vigilant.
“You’re just not safe anywhere,” Tifa said. “As a woman, you have to be alert at all times. You have to make sure no one is following.”
