An NYPD officer from Orange County is in critical condition after an evening accident on the New York State Thruway Sunday.
State police say the crash happened just after 8:35 p.m. on I-87 near exit 16 in Woodbury.
Authorities say a Jeep Wrangler, driven by off-duty NYPD Officer Alexis Penate, 32, struck a Hyundai, then lost control and overturned several times.
Penate was thrown from the vehicle and had to be airlifted to Westchester Medical Center. He is currently listed in critical condition. Officials say he suffered head trauma and internal injuries.
The driver of the Hyundai, Aaron Jeronimus, 29, of Wallkill, and his passenger were uninjured.
Penate's neighbors say he lived in Highland Mills with his wife and three children.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
