A proposal to build a New York City garbage-to-gas facility is now on hold after a landowner pulled out of the project.

The town supervisor told News 12 that the landowner is not moving forward with his Department of Environmental Conservation permit application.

Residents have been rallying against the plan, proposed by New Planet Energy, that could bring up to 4,500 tons of garbage a day to the active Superfund site on Holt Drive.

About 200 residents, including Haverstraw officials, showed up for a community meeting earlier this month to voice their opposition against the project.

Residents also want the DEC to carry out toxic testing on the site.

Despite the landowner leaving the project, New Planet Energy said it is moving forward with its DEC permit application and has already identified alternative sites. These sites were not specified.

In a statement, New Planet Energy President John Cruikshank said, "We are receptive to the concerns of the community and are prepared to scale the project back."
