NY State DOE: Schools who use Native American mascots must retire them by end of 2025 academic year

The state Department of Education spokesperson confirms public schools that use Native American mascots, team names and logos will have until the 2024-2025 school year to change the names and remove the symbols.

Many school districts across the Hudson Valley who use Native American mascots in their sports teams will have to change them over the next school year.
The state Department of Education spokesperson confirms public schools that use Native American mascots, team names and logos will have until the 2024-2025 school year to change the names and remove the symbols.
The spokesperson adds that the Board of Regents will vote to ban the mascots when it meets Monday and Tuesday in Albany.
Some school districts in the Hudson Valley, like Minisink Valley, have already retired their Native American mascots.
