The New York Assembly and Senate passed a bill to raise age to purchase semiautomatic rifle from 18 to 21. Gov. Kathy Hochul must still sign before it goes into effect. All ten bills centered on gun violence today were passed by both the Assembly and Senate.
The legislation is another step in response to trying to prevent mass shootings. However, New York City is also facing issues with gun violence. Just after midnight Thursday, a man was shot in the leg in Coney Island on West 32nd Street and Neptune Avenue, according to the NYPD. He is expected to survive his injuries.
Gov. Kathy Hochul and other state lawmakers are expected to announce the introduction of 10 bills to directly address issues that were brought to light after mass shootings in Buffalo and in Texas. Included in that legislation is increasing the age to buy a semi-automatic rifle from 18 to 21 years old, which has been passed.
Officials also want to strengthen the Red Flag Law, which would allow families and law-enforcement to restrict gun access to those who are at higher risk of harming themselves or others and also prohibits those who aren't in an eligible profession from buying body armor.
Another bill would close the "any other gun" loophole, including ghost guns.
Mayor Eric Adams made an announcement at a Gun Violence Awareness Month rally Thursday afternoon, introducing a new task force in preparation for the expected increase in gun violence this summer.
