The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles announced it will be giving formerly incarcerated people state IDs upon their release.
The new program is part of Gov. Kathy Hochul’s “Jails to Jobs” initiative. The goal is to help people assimilate back into society and remove barriers to employment.
Over 300 non-driver ID cards have been given out already.
All 43 state-run prisons are expected to be participating in the program by the end of October.
