Votes are being counted tonight at two Long Island hospitals to determine if nurses have approved their new contracts.

The tentative agreements were recently reached at Long Island Jewish Valley Stream and Peconic Bay Medical Center. Nurses at both hospitals had been poised to strike on Wednesday.

The contracts focus on nurse salaries and staff to patient ratios.

Both hospitals are operated by Northwell Health. The hospital system wrote in a statement:

“From the start of negotiations, our sole focus remained on ensuring that our patients continue to receive world-class care... The agreement provides competitive compensation and benefits and reaffirms our commitment to our team members and patients.”

Results of the votes are expected by Wednesday evening.
