Norwalk Public Schools will be
incorporating two new school resource officers at the beginning of the school
year as part of a security plan to keep children safe.
In less than one week, Norwalk
Public Schools will begin the school year, and to start the year off, they'll
have five SROs. Last year, they only had three.
Norwalk police confirm to News 12
two of the school resource officers will be posted at both Brien McMahon and
Norwalk high schools. The other three will float around between the elementary
and middle schools in the district.
Mayor Harry Rilling says the city,
police department and district are working to add more school resource officers
throughout the school year once some officers graduate the police academy.
The SRO program was once slashed
because of staffing issues at the police department.
There's been growing concern from
parents about security at schools in the district, especially since there were
several threats made last school year.
Police also ramped up their
presence at each school in the district after the Uvalde shooting in Texas.
In addition to the SROs, the
district plans to add more cameras to each building and door alarms to buildings
that do not have them.
