Recreational boats will now have to stay further away from Tappan Zee Bridge construction, thanks to new safety measures approved Tuesday by the Coast Guard.
Recreational boaters are now banned from a 2-mile long area along the shore in Rockland County. Construction barges are currently anchored in the area.
Fliers with a map depicting the new restrictions are being distributed to boaters in the area.
Some boaters say they are happy with the new measures because more construction equipment will be in the river as work on the new bridge increases.
"Safety comes first and there is a lot of obstructions over there with the barges," says Glenn DeSouza, of Hastings. "I think it's a good thing."
