More than two dozen theaters in New Jersey announced Thursday they will require audience members to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test for the unvaccinated, and masking for all ticket holders inside the theater.

John McEwen, executive director of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, says the industry is striving to be consistent so that audiences are not frustrated by varying policies. New Jersey theaters are following the lead of Broadway, which has adopted nearly identical protocols.

The theatre reopening campaign by the NJ Theatre Alliance is called “Opening Night, Opening Right.”

"Our theaters have taken a pledge to put safety first and to welcome back audiences into their theater so that they feel as comfortable walking into the venue as they do when they're sitting in the theater," McEwen said.

He says that includes deep cleaning before each show, health screenings before entry and contactless transactions will be available.

The site, openingright.com, went live on Thursday laying out the policies and even offering certain discounts to encourage people to come back and enjoy the show safely.
