The newly lifted fireworks ban in Orange County is creating some backlash, as well as safety concerns.
Officials in Middletown say there were about 100 complaints over the Fourth of July weekend, including a fireworks-related brush fire in a park. They say that officers had to be taken off DWI details to handle calls. There was also concern about debris left behind.
"In a dense community like Middletown, especially in our older neighborhoods, it was just a cloud of smoke," says Middletown Mayor Joe DeStefano. "One caller said it was like Saigon."
DeStefano says he wants county government to change the fireworks law to allow individual municipalities to opt in, so that Middletown can opt out.
