Newburgh officials are working on a multimillion-dollar sewer project they say will help many residents and businesses in the area.
Ward 2 Council Member Ramona Monteverde says the city’s plans to overhaul sections of the over 100-year-old sewer system will not only prevent sewage overrun into the Hudson River, but also lead to local business investments.
City officials say this is one phase of a three-phase project that's going to cost $32 million. They say they plan to invest $70 million in projects all around the town.
The city intends on using over $10 million of the $21 million it received through the American Rescue Plan to help fund the project.
Although sewer work may temporarily make business difficult by blocking streets, Newburgh Brewery owner Paul Halayko remains optimistic about the project.
“The city making this massive financial commitment to the infrastructure is going to attract more people here, whether it be residents or businesses,” he said.
The next phase of underground construction is already underway. Officials say the project should be completed in Spring of 2024.
