There's mixed reaction from families across the Hudson Valley after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that summer day camps can reopen at the end of the month.
Summer day camps in New York state have been given the green light to open on June 29, though no decision has been made yet on sleep-away camps, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday.
But the typical camp experience will look a lot different this year as the camps will operate with new protocols in place.
There will be fewer campers, health checks and other coronavirus protection measures.
A spokesman for the governor said more details would be forthcoming on additional safety measures camps must take.
As recently as two weeks ago, the governor had been hesitant about reopening camps because state officials had been worried about a rare illness in children that is likely linked to COVID-19.
The inflammatory virus has killed a number of New York children, including a child in Westchester.
Village officials in Pleasantville say even with the governor giving the OK, they will still hold off of opening summer camps for now.
Pleasantville dad Chris Bush said his two kids were looking forward to going to camp.
"They'll miss their friends and being out socializing with them. We look at the good side and we spend more time with the family which is great," he says.
Other parents say sending kids to summer camp during a pandemic is too risky,
"You cant' stop a kid from sneezing on another kid, no matter how many Clorox wipes..children aren't as cognizant of their actions as adults," says parent Carolyn Kaufman.
Wally Tosano says it's a matter of thoroughly checking out the camp that you send your kids to.
"I would look into the camp, and see how the camp is structured...camp is a great thing for kids," he says.
