New York is increasing security around Jewish communities and houses of worship ahead of the High Holy Days.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that State Police will boost their presence near Jewish neighborhoods and religious institutions as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur approach.
The state is also providing a record $70 million in security funding to 290 nonprofit organizations considered vulnerable to hate crimes and attacks.
Officials said the money can be used for security improvements including alarms, surveillance cameras, barriers, shatter-resistant glass and cybersecurity measures.
The announcement comes as New York City reports an increase in hate crimes.
"We shouldn't have to do this. We should never have to be thinking that these places of worship have to be fortified against hate, and I pray that this time will pass," Hochul said.
Rosh Hashanah begins Friday evening, Sept. 11. Yom Kippur begins at sundown Sept. 20.
