Traffic officially began moving across the new Tappan Zee Bridge Saturday.

The bridge officially opened early Saturday morning as the first group of drivers made their way across and took it all in.

The $3.9 billion Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge opened to Rockland-bound traffic across the span after four years of construction.

The Tappan Zee Bridge opened to traffic more than 60 years ago, but drivers complained about narrow lanes and heavy traffic. The new bridge is equiped with wider lanes and a pedestrian path. 

Ella Hart, of Yonkers, says she was very excited to see the new bridge. She says she was up early not to drive on the bridge but to snap pictures of it.

She says she has a great appreciation of all the people who poured their hearts into the project.

"I was thinking about the workers," she says. "You see what they've been doing. You see the end product. It takes a lot of work."

Construction of the bridge began in late 2013. It is expected to be open in both directions sometime next year.
