New York state's new education commissioner made a stop in Yonkers Thursday.
Commissioner MaryEllen Elia visited the Cedar Place School to acclimate herself to the Yonkers School District. She also met with school, city and state officials who are looking to her to help the troubled district.
Elia, who accepted her new post in May, says her agenda for the city includes increasing testing standards, addressing high class sizes and overall school resources.
"She said she's willing to work with everyone to get the best results," says state Senate Minority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. "Obviously, she doesn't write the school aid formula, but she can make recommendations."
Earlier this month, the Yonkers City Council finally passed the school district's budget after pleading with the state for a bailout.
