New Rochelle Board of Ed. focuses on safety and security
The New Rochelle Board of Education is kicking off the first in a series of town hall meetings with the goal of keeping the community informed.
Parents who attended the meeting told News 12 that their main concerns are safety and security.
This comes after a rash of violence in and off the New Rochelle High School campus last year, including one incident resulting in the death of a student.
The district says the changes it made are meant to change the environment at the school and the mindset of students.
"There is a new program that is going to be going on where a couple of teachers are going to take their time with the kids during the suspension trying to teach them living skills as well as work with them with homework and reorient them back into the high school,” said Board of Education President Jeffrey Hastie.
Hallway sweeps are being conducted between periods, security is on site and the school remains a closed campus for all students.
News 12 did speak with a few parents who say they are happy with some of the changes that have been made, but say it's too soon to tell whether any of it will make an impact long term.
"So far so good," says Jairo Castro. "I can’t say anything because it’s only been two, three weeks. I hope it keeps quiet."
