Neighbors in a Hudson Valley community are weighing in on a new parking rule that goes into effect this weekend.
Residents say that finding a parking spot in West Harrison can get tricky.

"Being here for so long, you definitely see it getting packed," says West Harrison resident Luis Barrera.

Barrera says that's especially the case on the street where he lives.

"We're all fighting for the same parking spot and it's unfair that our parking spots are being taken from people from a different town," Barrera explains.

That's why the town of Harrison is rolling out a new residential parking system.

"It prohibits parking on our public roadways by non-permitted vehicles," says Harrison Police Lt. Carmine Gentile.

Gentile explains that it essentially reserves overnight street parking for residents only.

People who live within the parking system will need to obtain free permits for all of their vehicles.

Officials with the Harrison Police Department say this is really needed.

"A lot of out-of-towners leave their vehicles in our roadways and (are) using them basically as storage or to get them off the street in neighboring areas," says Gentile.

However, not everyone is on board.

"I think it's an awful idea. It's bad enough I have to park on the street, it's kind of another pain in the neck," says Ann Robertson, who works in the area.

Others agree the parking can get congested but they have questions.

"If you want to have family come over or a significant other come over, it makes things more difficult," says West Harrison resident Doug Carson.

A similar rule is already in place in other parts of Harrison. Neighbors there say it's working.

"It has been pretty copacetic for everybody," says Justin Volpe, who lives in Harrison.

The permits are issued through the town clerk's office. The new rule goes into effect Saturday.
