A new cleanup initiative in the borough is not only promoting cleaner sidewalks, but also creating an economic opportunity for residents.
The initiative, set forth by nonprofit group The Doe Fund, is working to keep the streets of Morris Park, Van Nest and West Farms clear of debris.
Andrew Walcott is one of the workers maintaining the streets. He says The Doe Fund gave him an opportunity to change his life, both mentally and financially.
"It feels good," Walcott said, speaking about his position. "It focused me to want to do better in life, instead of just settling for less."
Walcott is one of six Doe Fund workers who clean Bronx streets from Morris Park Avenue to Williamsbridge Road, and from East 180th Street to Boston Road.
The program is funded by City Council members James Vacca and Ritchie Torres. The councilmen were able to raise a combined $136,000 for their district.
Vacca and Torres say they hope the money allocated for The Doe Fund will encourage their fellow Bronx councilmembers to follow suit.
