There are 14 new one-bedroom apartments on Western Highway in Tappan for homeless veterans.
They are part of a years-long project by Rockland Homes for Heroes, led by John Murphy.
Murphy spent decades as a county legislator and is a former captain with the USMC.
“It’s a dream come true. I had a vision and now it’s a reality,” said Murphy.
Murphy says veterans should be moving in in about six weeks.
Each home features a kitchen, washer/dryer and handicapped accessible.
They are not yet furnished, but money from local businesses will help do that.
On Thursday, Keller Williams Hudson Valley Real Estate gave the nonprofit $10,000.
On that same day, Anchor Trading presented a $50,000 check.
Anchor trading is a company by Navy veteran and Rockland resident Sean Magee.
“John Murphy has done some incredible work over the years,” said Magee. “So, it's really, really powerful to know that we're truly able to change lives."
U.S. government data from January 2022 found there were 33,129 homeless veterans.
