More than two dozen people from 14 countries became U.S. citizens during a naturalization ceremony at Rockland Community College on Friday.

The new Americans took the oath of allegiance and pledged to our nations flag.

"Today, after 10 years of living here, this journey concludes and I'm very happy, very proud, and very thankful," said Mariana Azarias who is originally from Brazil. "This is a milestone that should be celebrated. So having the ceremonies back is definitely something everyone should be able to be a part of."

These ceremonies were recently halted in parts of New York by the federal government, citing a review of the legal process.

Rep. Mike Lawler, a Republican who represents much of the Hudson Valley, advocated to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service officials for their return.

"These families deserved this moment. To celebrate the joy of becoming an American citizen and pursuing their American dream. So for me, this is the right thing to do, to make sure these ceremonies continue," said Lawler.

Naturalization Ceremonies are expected to return next month in Westchester County.
