The case displaying a Nativity scene in Nyack was damaged just days before Christmas, prompting an investigation from Orangetown police.

For the past six years, a Nativity scene has stood in Hezekiah Easter Square during the holiday season. This year, however, the display's plastic case protecting the creche was damaged.

“There’s so much hate in this world and so much anger,” said Ed Tangredi. “It’s sad when it gets to this, when somebody would want to purposefully break the front of the creche.”

Tangredi is with the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Parish of St. Paul's & St. Ann’s, which own and maintain the display.

Orangetown police say one of their officers noticed the damage on Monday. Authorities are now investigating the incident as possible criminal mischief.

A police officer was seen visiting a nearby business on Tuesday to review surveillance footage as part of the investigation.

The incident has sparked strong reactions from members of the Nyack community.

“Nyack is a great community town, and the fact that something like this would happen here — it’s just a shame,” said Dave, a local resident.

Despite the damage, Tangredi says the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.

“A bad thing happened, but a good thing is coming from it as the community is coming together over this,” he said. “…So many people have offered their help in fixing it.”

The case is expected to be repaired Wednesday, just in time for Christmas. Tangredi also shared a message for whoever is responsible.

“Just come forward and talk to us,” he said. “Maybe you’ve got some problems you need some help with.”

Nyack Mayor Joe Rand released a statement calling the incident “an inexcusable act of cowardice,” while also praising the “outpouring of support from the community for St. Ann's and the Knights of Columbus.”

Police ask anyone with information to contact the Orangetown Police Department at (845) 359-3700.
