A 28-year-old Elmont man accused of attacking two police officers as they were trying to arrest him for violating an order of protection was released by a judge Sunday.
Police say officers on patrol around 3:30 p.m. Saturday recognized Hurguens Jasmin walking on Dutch Avenue in Elmont. They approached him about an outstanding warrant for violating an order of protection in August 2024.
Police say as they were arresting him, Jasmin resisted – punching one officer in the face repeatedly and gouging the eye of the other. He was charged with assault and resisting arrested.
Both officers were taken to the hospital.
On Sunday, a Nassau judge released Jasmin from custody. The judge signed another order of protection and ordered Jasmin to undergo anger management. He is due back in court on Wednesday.
Jasmin’s release did not sit well with Elmont residents or the Nassau PBA.
"He might be violent to the public as well. I have three kids and that wouldn't really feel safe,” said Malak Griess, of Elmont.
The Nassau PBA sent News 12 a statement: “The release of Hurguens Jasmin, a violent repeat offender who has assaulted police officers multiple times, is a complete failure of our justice system.”
Police say Jasmin was previously charged with resisting arrest and two counts of assault with injury to an officer in August 2024.
